Hendrix
The BurgerBoys are back with a new review! This time we went out for the first time on a Friday night – a perfect opportunity to end the workweek with a good burger and a relaxed atmosphere. This time we ended up at Hendrix, located on the De Clercqstraat in Oud-West. A place with a musical vibe and (so they say) one of the better burgers in the neighborhood. High time to put it to the test ourselves. Let's eat!

Location
Distance
Hendrix is located in one of the liveliest streets of Oud-West, although that liveliness is currently partly hidden under a layer of sand and building materials due to the redevelopment of the street. This makes accessibility a bit more difficult. We took tram 17, got off at the Marnixstraat/Rozengracht stop and walked the last bit in a few minutes. All in all, it took us about 20 minutes to get there. Not ideal, but it did give us the chance to see how big the redevelopment is being tackled. The end result promises a lot of good.
Environment
Hendrix is located in a lively neighborhood with a mix of trendy shops and cafes. Despite the construction, the area exudes an authentic Amsterdam vibe. Hendrix fits perfectly in this neighborhood: this is clearly a place where both residents and tourists feel at home. Don't expect a deserted street - even on a cold Friday night it was pleasantly busy.
Realm
When you enter Hendrix you immediately feel that they have taken the coziness of a traditional pub and given it a modern twist. Hip, but not over the top – it has that typical Amsterdam atmosphere. The walls are decorated with photos of musical greats, the lighting is warm and the audience is a mix of locals, music lovers and random passers-by. In the back there is a VIP-like booth that looks like a bandstand. We took a seat there but noticed that the legroom was a bit tight for us. In short: Hendrix feels like a place where you can sit down for a beer and a burger after a long day – exactly what we were looking for.

Choices

Beer
As befits a good pub, the beer menu is nicely varied. You can choose from various draft and bottled beers that perfectly match the burgers. You will always find something that goes well with your meal. Nothing to complain about here.
Burgers
The menu features the Hendrix Burger: a burger made with Lindenhoff beef, cucumber pickle, little gem and Hendrix burger sauce on a sesame brioche bun. For an extra €1.50 per topping, you can add bacon and cheddar, which we did right away. Fries come standard with the burger. Without the extra toppings, the burger comes across as a bit plain, so these upgrades are a must.

Burger details
From Burger
The burger looks promising at first glance. The patty is nice and thick and juicy, nicely grilled and pink on the inside. The bacon and cheddar are perfectly prepared and take the burger to a higher level. The burger sauce is subtle and balanced – not an over the top BBQ bomb, just a nice addition. The cucumber pickle provides a refreshing and slightly sour bite. All in all it is a good combination of ingredients. The burger really has personality and in Hendrix has enough personalities to look up to. The bun itself is fine but lacks a bit of character. A more special bun – with its own twist – could have taken the burger to a higher level. If we may make a recommendation, the menu could have had an extra burger option. A Rendang Burger for example? (Hint, hint, Hendrix.)

The Fries
The burger comes with standard fries, but out of the corner of our eye we also saw Patatje Rendang on the menu. As lovers of special fries combinations, we couldn't pass this one up. When ordering, we were told that fries were already included with the burger, but we could change this.
French fries Rendang | Indonesian beef stew, fresh fries, pickles, sriracha mayonnaise
Because this dish is listed under “Bites” on the menu, you get less fries than with the standard portion. We saw that other guests who ordered the burger ordered more fries. Should we have kept the fries that you get with the burger? About the fries: they are deliciously crispy and well-done, so that they did not become soggy because of the rendang on top. By the way, that rendang is great, nice and tender and well-seasoned. Definitely Indo approved. The addition of the atjar (red cabbage) and the pickled cucumber made for a perfect balance. We got standard mayo with our fries and not the promised srirachamayo that is mentioned on the menu. The mayo was not really considered a loss, but the srirachamayo would have rounded off the flavors a bit better. This Patatje Rendang is really a pleasant surprise on the menu and we think it is the perfect side with the burger.

Service
Hendrix has made sure that we will now include the service as a separate component in the review. Why? Because we find the service at Hendrix exceptional and this deserves a separate mention. Despite it being a Friday evening and the place being full, it did not feel rushed or impersonal. We were immediately warmly welcomed and given a nice spot where we could see everything well. The food was on the table quickly and the service remained friendly and attentive. When our fries were finished, the plates were immediately cleared away so that there was more room on the table – small details that make a difference. We were the first to order the Hendrix Burger & Patatje Rendang combo – something the service kept mentioning with enthusiasm.

Judgement
Hendrix is a great place for a good burger & beer night. The combination of atmosphere, taste and service ensures that you leave here with a smile. We certainly do. The burger has a strong foundation, but the bun could be better. Hendrix delivers a burger that lives up to its promises: a delicious patty of top-quality meat with well-chosen toppings that don't distract too much from the meat, but do complement the taste nicely. The addition of bacon and cheddar is recommended for those who like extra flavor. Service? Top. But that Patatje Rendang? That steals the show. That could just as well have been a main course. We understand that this is a favorite. The enthusiasm with which the staff responded to our choice for the combination of the Hendrix Burger and the Patatje Rendang gave us a feeling of genuine involvement. Hendrix definitely scores bonus points here. Final verdict: Hendrix rocks. Good food, good vibe, perfect service but with a few tweaks Hendrix could become an even bigger hit.
